Ukraine has imposed sanctions on Alexander Lukashenko, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accusing the Belarusian leader of playing an increasingly larger role in Russia’s war efforts, UNITED24 Media reported.

In remarks cited by the news agency, Zelenskyy accused Lukashenko of helping the Russian Federation circumvent global sanctions, kill Ukrainians through operational support given to Russian troops, and prolong his country’s conflict with Moscow. “There will be special consequences for this,” he said in the report.

Last year, Russian troops deployed relay systems in Belarus to control strike drones, expanding Russia’s ability to attack northern regions of Ukraine, Zelenskyy said in the report.  Without that assistance, the number of strikes on energy infrastructure and railways in those regions would likely have been lower, he said.

The new sanctions call for asset and capital freezes, a full suspension of trade and transit operations, termination of financial obligations and permits, restrictions on participation in privatization and public procurement, limits on certain property and corporate transactions, the suspension of international cooperation across multiple sectors, and visa and property restrictions, among other measures, UNITED24 said.
